Botox signals the brain through the C-GRP pathway to down regulate migraine activity. Botox injections are applied to the scalp every 12 wks and have been shown to effectively reduce the intensity and frequency of chronic migraines. If you have more than 15 headache days a month and your headaches last 4 hours or longer, you may be a candidate for Botox treatment.
The sphenopalatine ganglion regulates the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and is responsible for sensation to large areas of the face and scalp. Through a small catheter inserted into the nose, this bundle of nerves can be blocked with local anesthetic. Sphenopalatine ganglion blocks can provide profound relief of acute migraines and reduce the frequency of chronic migraines.
The occipital nerves are a pair of cutaneous nerves that run from the base of the skull to the top of the scalp. When these nerves are blocked with local anesthetic, migraines and headaches are stopped immediately. Occipital nerve blocks are an effective "rescue" when medications fail to stop severe migraines and can help to prevent future migraines for a short period of time.
Neck arthritis is a common cause of cervicogenic headaches. The third occipital nerves and the medial branch nerves of the cervical spine provide sensory innervation to the base of the skull and cervical spine. Radiofrequency ablation is an injection that targets and then destroys these nerves, providing long lasting relief from chronic headaches.
